Jerez is situated 83 kms south of Seville and 30
kms North East of Cadiz in the agricultural plains
south of the Rio Guadalquivir.
The General area development plan tackles environmental
issues within the municipal area and establishes protective
measures for natural resources (hydrological, building,
landscaping, flora and fauna ..) backed by a complete
set of regulations the aim of which is to preserve
them from harmful actions and improve levels of conservation
and develo p.m.ent. Although norms regarding conservation
affect the area as a whole, several areas have been
designated of special ecological value: the Aljibe
district, which includes the whole western side of
the municipal territory from the Sierra de Cabras,
towards the east which is mainly forest, the Guadalete
Valley district which includes all the valley along
the course of the river as it passes by Jerez, a large
part of its limits being defines by the irrigation
channels of Guadalcacín, and finally 42 separate
areas which are grouped under the heading of Areas
of Great Landscaping and Environmental Interest and
which correspond to all the wetlands of the area,
the Complejos Serranos, the banks of the Guadalete,
the stre a.m.s, rises, plains and escar p.m.ents,
the forestry systems and the Areas of Cultural Landscaping
Interest.
