The World Equestrian Games are governed by the Federation
Equestre Internationale (FEI), and are comprised of
many different disciplines such as Jumping, Dressage,
Driving, Vaulting, Three-Day Event and Endurance Riding.
Stockholm's Olympic Stadion hosted the first WEG in
1990. A rather disorganized games was at at The Hague,
Netherlands in 1994. The 1998 Games were to be held
just outside Dublin, Ireland but were cancelled in
early 1997.Rome stepped in and hosted the 1998 World
Equestrian Games.
The 2002 Games were held in Jerez, Spain.
Jerez is 97 kilometers (58 miles) away from the city
of Sevilla and 32 kilometers (19 miles) from Cadiz
with excellent road, rail and air connections. The
most important road link is the N IV (E-5), which
connects Jerez with Seville and Cadiz. It is about
an eight-hour journey by road from Madrid and by a
high speed train (AVE) is just over a two-hour journey
from Madrid to Seville.The local railway station links
Jerez with a large number of cities in Spain, and
the regular train service takes just over four hours
to Madrid.
Jerez de la Frontera also has an international airport
with regular flights from Madrid, Saragossa, Barcelona,
Tenerife and various European cities. Jerez airport
is only five minutes from the city.
During the celebration of the Games, the Jerez City
Hall plans to enhance the internal transport network
to facilitate access to both the Chapin (stadium)
complex and the Cortijo Vicos-Garrapilos (cross-country).
