Costa del Sol Beaches

Regardless of which end you begin your journey, be it in Manilva or Nerja, the 161 kilometres of Malaga’s coastline must be travelled in their entirety. And we shall never be alone along the way. Wherever we may be, the sun will always be present, making the days more amenable. Not for nothing are we on the Costa del Sol, a coastline that becomes rocky and crinkled in its eastern section, home to locations as beautiful as they are historic, such as Nerja Cave, while in the west, it is crammed with beaches equipped with every possible facility to satisfy the most demanding of tourists, pride of place going to the pleasure harbours of Puerto Marina and Puerto Banús.

In places such as these, as well as bronzing ourselves in the candour of the persistent Malaga sunshine, we can cool off and have fun in a multitude of ways in the warm waters of the Mediterranean, be it with a simple dip in the sea or through water sports such as windsurfing, kite surfing or surfing itself, in the area near Torremolinos, rowing, canoeing or water-skiing. More sedate bathers can head out to the high sea at their own pace on a pedalo. Of course, there is plenty going on at the beach as well: beach volleyball is extremely popular. And, when the first pangs of hunger appear, it is time to try the famous fried fish at one of the many beach bars or “chiringuitos”.

At sunset, small bonfires begin to appear on the sand. Do not be alarmed: these are “moragas”, beach barbeques in which groups of friends gather together and cook food. Some of these beaches boast long promenades, such as those in Torre del Mar, Nerja and Torrox, which are lined with all manner of establishments that will enable us to carry on enjoying the sun beyond the confines of the beach itself. The city of Malaga also has three promenades: La Malagueta, Antonio Machado and Huelin-Misericordia.
