San Lucar de Barrameda

San Lucar de Barrameda is situated at the mouth of the River Guadalquivir, which has functioned as a source of influence of many important cultures and civilisations which have left behind them their indelible mark on the area. This privileged situation makes it an ideal starting point to visit the Doñana National Park.

The town was consituted in the 13th century, becoming in the 15th and 16th centuries one of the most important ports of the trade which connected the Atlantic with the Mediterranean.

The most important buildings are:
The Castillo de Santiago (15th century),
Las Covachas (15th century),
La Iglesia de la O,
The Palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia
and the Palacio de los Duques de Montpensier

In the popular beach known as the Bajo de guía horse races are held each year in summertime.
